Depot charging infrastructure for 70 electric buses
Design of depot charging infrastructure for 70 electric buses, with 3.5 MW of power, on-site high-voltage distribution and three transformer stations. The work laid the technical basis for procurement.
3.5 MW · 70 buses · 3 transformer stations

The challenge
Strætó was expanding its electric bus fleet and needed a depot that could charge a large fleet every night. This was not about installing chargers but about megawatts of power, new on-site high-voltage distribution and a charging schedule that kept the buses on time. As a publicly owned company, Strætó needed the solution clearly defined before it could be tendered.
What we did
- Analysed charging demand from the bus schedule: arrival times, dwell times and energy needs
- Designed charging infrastructure for 70 buses with 3.5 MW of total power
- Defined on-site high-voltage distribution and the placement of three transformer stations to minimise losses
- Allowed for fleet expansion in the design
Outcome
- Charging infrastructure for 70 buses, 3.5 MW, designed from real operations rather than theoretical peak power
- High-voltage distribution and three transformer stations on site
- A ready basis for tendering the charging infrastructure
Lesson
The biggest savings are made at the design stage, before construction starts.
