Increasing grid capacity with battery storage
System design, requirements and procurement of a 1 MW / 2 MWh battery that increases usable grid capacity in a remote community without immediate network reinforcement.
1 MW / 2 MWh

The challenge
The local distribution network could not take additional load, which delayed new connections and electrification, including public fast charging. The conventional answer would have been a costly network reinforcement with a long lead time.
What we did
- Defined the technical concept and system architecture for a grid-connected battery
- Shaped the peak-shaving strategy and battery-to-EMS communication
- Wrote the requirements, including factory acceptance testing (FAT)
- Supported the procurement process
- Designed the containerised installation and site safety
Outcome
- A 1 MW / 2 MWh battery that behaves as part of the grid
- More room for new load in the area
- A faster route than conventional network reinforcement
Lesson
Limited grid capacity is becoming the main barrier to electrification. Batteries can unlock it faster than reinforcement.
